Why is this bike so cheap?

Compared to other aluminum bikes with Shimano 105 components, this new for 2009 Giant Defy bike has an MSRP of only $1400. Most I've looked at with similar components are closer to $1800. Can anyone tell me if it's just that Giant is less costly overall, or is there something specific about this bike that makes it inferior to say a Trek 2.3? Here's a link:

  1. I don’t think it’s inferior to the Trek at all, but the 2. 3 does have a few better parts on it. Not $400 worth at the retail level, though. Giant has always had great bang for the buck and this is one example.

With the 2. 3 you get full 105 (including the crank) with an Ultegra rear derailleur and somewhat better wheels. The Defy has fairly cheap wheels and the Gossamer crank. . . . not bad parts at all, just cheaper than what is spec’d on the Trek.

If it were me and I were choosing between the two, I’d get the Giant and upgrade a few parts later on.

  2. The Trek also has carbon seat stays which will make a significant difference in how it rides. The best advice is to go ride both of them, preferably over the same route and see how they feel. Make your decision based on they ride and handle, not on price if you help it.

It looks like it would be a fine bike, just might have some slighty heavier components than you would find on a pricier bike.

  4. $1400 ain’t that cheap. But Giant has always been know to be a good value – you usually get more for your money with Giant. That’s why I eneded up with a Giant MTB. And your comparing it to one of the least value for the buck bikes. Treks are very good but not a great value at all.

giant and fuji bikes are the best deal anywhere. since they are japanese companies, they get better prices from shimano been japanese. also the yen conversion always plays in their favor.
do not doubt getting that bike, it is the best deal for money
