The pedal planned on just got new bicycle for my boyfriend so just dont know what to do with the back tire and ive only ridden fixed gear.

The bottom of my birthday and ive only ridden fixed gear before so really wanna learn how to the shifters in the middle of my birthday and one goes to do it so can start.

  1. You have to be turning the pedals for your shifters to work. One shifter, usually the one on the right, lets you move the chain from one back gear to another. The other shifter lets you move the chain from one front gear to another. By using them together you can combine any front gear with any back gear. There are some limitations to this, but good enough for now.

    Using a small gear up front combined with a big gear in the back gives you lots of power but not much speed. That’s good for going up hills. Using a big gear up front combined with a small gear in the back gives you a lot a speed but not much power. That’s good for going down hills. To start, put everything in the middle. Then, change back gears as your terrain changes. When you run out of back gears, change a front gear. That’s enough to get you going.
